Part 6

Qualitative Research Design

Qualitative research collects data that will be analyzed as words. This section discusses the basic approaches to qualitative research, starting with the methods by which it is collected. Topic 46 discusses the widespread use of interviews in qualitative research designs, and Topic 47 provides an overview of focus groups and observation as qualitative methods of data collection. Topics 48 and 49 explain two approaches for qualitative research designs, each of which involves specific processes for evaluating data. Because qualitative research is inductive, many decisions about the research process must be made in advance. Data collection and analysis often purposely intermingle to improve the results. Topics 50 and 51 discuss research methods that build upon the earlier topics: case studies and mixed methods research.
